The short answer
A food hygiene certificate has no legal expiry date in the UK. Your employer decides how often you need refresher training. We suggest a refresher every 3 years, or sooner if your role, your food or the rules change.
Does a food hygiene certificate expire?
No. There is no legal expiry date for food hygiene training anywhere in the UK. Some employers, customers and auditors set their own refresher policy. A date on a certificate is a suggestion from the provider or a business policy. It is not a legal limit.
When should you refresh your training?
Consider refresher training when:
- Your role or duties change
- Procedures, equipment or menus change
- Laws or guidance are updated
- An audit or inspection identifies gaps
- You have been away from food work for some time
How long does the training take?
This depends on the level. Level 1 is short, and Level 2 and Level 3 take longer because they go into more depth. Each course page shows its estimated study time and the number of exam questions.
Our certificates are private training certificates of completion, not regulated qualifications. UK law does not require one specific food hygiene certificate. It requires food handlers to be supervised and instructed or trained appropriately. Employers decide what training each role needs, and a certificate does not replace practical instruction or supervision.
