About this course
This course is for people who are responsible for food safety in a business, not only for their own work. It covers the law in each UK nation, advanced microbiology, temperature control, HACCP-based systems, cross-contamination, suppliers, premises, allergens, staff supervision and how to respond when something goes wrong.
Where the rules differ between England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, the lessons say so. Examples come from UK kitchens, shops and care settings.
When you pass you receive a private certificate of completion. It is not a regulated qualification. 'Level 3' describes the depth of the content and is not a level on the RQF or SCQF. Your employer decides what training your role needs.

UK law sets no expiry date for food hygiene training. We suggest a refresher about every 3 years, and your employer may ask for it sooner.
Our certificates are private training certificates of completion, not regulated qualifications. UK law does not require one specific food hygiene certificate. It requires food handlers to be supervised and instructed or trained appropriately. Employers decide what training each role needs, and a certificate does not replace practical instruction or supervision.
Questions about this course
Should I take Level 2 first?
It helps, but it is not required. Level 3 revises the key points and then goes deeper.
Does the law require managers or supervisors to hold Level 3?
No. No law requires a specific certificate or level. Food handlers must be supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene matters commensurate with their work, and those responsible for HACCP-based procedures must have adequate training. Your employer decides what training a role needs.
What does 'Level 3' mean on this course?
It describes the depth of the content. It does not mean a level on the RQF or SCQF, and this is not a regulated qualification.
What do I receive when I pass?
A private certificate of completion, with a code that an employer can check online. It is not an accredited or regulated qualification.
How long does the course take?
Allow about 2 hours. That is about 1 hour 25 minutes to read the lessons and 40 minutes for the exam. You can stop and return whenever you like.
How does the exam work?
There are 40 multiple-choice questions, many based on workplace scenarios, and you need 80% to pass. You can retake it as many times as you need at no extra cost.
Does the certificate expire?
Certificates have no legal expiry. Your employer may set a refresher period. It is good practice to refresh your training when the law, your role or your menu changes.
Does the course cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?
Yes. The lessons cover all four UK nations and say where the rules differ, including temperature rules, hygiene rating schemes and HACCP-based packs.
