About this course

Since 1 October 2021, food that is prepacked for direct sale (PPDS) must show the name of the food and a full ingredients list with the 14 allergens emphasised. These rules apply across the UK and are known as Natasha's Law.

This course explains what PPDS is and is not, with worked examples. It shows you how to write the name, the ingredients list and allergen emphasis, when a percentage is needed, and how to keep labels right when suppliers and recipes change. It also covers loose food, online sales and enforcement.

UK law sets no expiry date for food hygiene training. We suggest a refresher about every 3 years, and your employer may ask for it sooner.

Our certificates are private training certificates of completion, not regulated qualifications. UK law does not require one specific food hygiene certificate. It requires food handlers to be supervised and instructed or trained appropriately. Employers decide what training each role needs, and a certificate does not replace practical instruction or supervision.

Questions about this course

How long does this course take?

About 17 minutes of lessons plus a 12-question assessment, so around 30 minutes in total. You can study at your own pace.

Does this apply across the UK?

Yes. PPDS rules apply in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The FSA and Food Standards Scotland publish separate guidance, and the lessons point out where to check.

Do I need this if I only sell food online?

The PPDS ingredients list rule does not apply to food sold only by phone, online or by mail order, but allergen information must be available before purchase and at delivery. This course covers both.

Do I legally need this certificate?

No law requires a specific certificate. Your employer decides what training your role needs. If you run your own business, you are responsible for making sure your labels are right.

Is this certificate accredited?

This is a private certificate of completion issued by us. It is not a regulated qualification. Your employer decides whether it meets their needs.
